Back2Work

I didn't have to buy any supplies (other than pants to fit my differently shaped buttocks) to go Back2Work but I do have that feeling of newness.

I am officially back to work. I had to take Nolan to day care this morning and I officially sobbed uncontrollably while dropping him off. UGH my heart hurts.

But the real surprise is how well I'm doing AT work. I really feel OK here. Maybe it's because when I'm here I just feel like I did pre-baby. I am working and bringing home the beneys (my job doesn't pay a lot so Brian brings home the Benjamin's, I bring home the benefits)

Getting ready to drop Nolan off was hard. I had to remember all the things he'll need on a daily basis. He doesn't need toys, but I just realized I forgot his blanket... you know, the one that smells like me so he feels like I'm there. BAD MAMA!

I'm really thankful that I was able to work out an arrangement so that I can take a shorter lunch and leave a little earlier to pick up Nolan. ZOMG I can't wait to see him and kiss him soooo much. He's going to be like, "Muh-OMMMM STOP! Not in front of my new friends!"

Nolan and K - I don't know her parents yet so I'd feel bad naming her on my blog!
Check out my boy, such a ladies man! He is actually 4 days younger than the pretty miss laying next to him. She looks so much smaller than him!

---

Shopping is a problem for me. I'm constantly looking at Baby Gap's clothes. Seriously, someone needs to stop me. I can't afford that kind of clothing for my baby! CONSIGNMENT SHOPPING IS BETTER!

... but BABY GAP IS SOOOOOO CUTE!....

---

Ummm yeah, I'm going to celebrate my first day back to work with my husband and NOLAN tonight! So excited to see my little man... just a few more minutes... :)

The Times - They Are A'Changing

The time has come to semi-retire this blog. I am writing more about stuff that is open to all my family and friends and I have been writing that blog for longer. Please feel free to follow me there!

Happy One Month Birthday, Nolan!!!

OH MY GOSH... NOLAN IS ONE MONTH OLD TODAY! I seriously can't believe it. A MONTH.

My Favorite Things (so far):
  • I love holding him when he's sleeping! He makes this adorable cooing noise as he's breathing and sometimes it sounds a little squeaky. It's adorable! I wish I could record it, but every time my phone goes up to him, he gets camera shy.
  • His feet... I'm not sure if this is something all babies do, but Nolan flexes his toes so they're all spread apart and kind of pointing upward when he's on his back. He also takes his legs in and kicks his feet and it's honestly one of my favorite things to watch! His feet are soooo soft... and yes, I kiss them all the time.
  • His expressions when he's feeding... I can TOTALLY see his dad in his eyes when he's feeding. It's like this "I'm concentrating" look that they both have.
  • When he tries to stay awake. You know what I'm talking about... he's clearly sleepy but he wants to be part of the action so instead of sleeping he just forces his eyes open and blinks a lot until his eyelids get so heavy they just stay closed. I could watch this all day.
  • When he looks at me. He doesn't have an expression of love or happiness just yet (although there's an occasional smile that creeps up) but when he's looking at me it's locked eye contact and nothing will break his concentration.
Other (non-Nolan) favorites:
  • Cloth diapering. I love it so far! It's not that hard to throw the diapers in the wash and put them on a rack to dry. I like to think I'm saving ~$0.50 a diaper here and eventually they will pay for themselves. I got the BumGenius Freetime and 4.0's.
  • The Snugabunny Swing - I'm pretty sure any swing would work, but Nolan really likes it for sleeping in during the day. He can sleep well in his crib at night but once the sun rises he's more likely to sleep in an upright position.
  • His activity mat - He's really starting to play with the little dangly toys!
Since having Nolan I have lost 29 pounds! YIKES. My stomach is kinda/sorta back to where it was before with a little extra skin that hopefully will shrink. I haven't taken care of myself that well though to be honest. It really is hard to give myself a moment to brush my teeth and do my hair. I will be doing that this morning because I have a day of fun at Lowe's planned for me and Nolan.

I'm looking forward to the next group of visitors that are coming! We have my SIL/BIL coming this weekend, also we're going to a golf tourney with a lot of my cousins from my Mom's side there. My BFF is coming from Oklahoma next weekend too!

From his newborn session... I'll post some 1 month pictures later :)

Mom Report - 4 Weeks 1 Day

Nolan is already over 4 weeks old! Where on earth has time gone?

I feel really lucky because Nolan is just such a GOOD baby. He only cries when he needs something - so far I don't notice any colic or fussiness. He's also gaining weight really well! At his 2 week appointment he was 1 pound over his birth weight. His pediatrician wanted to give me a high five!

I'm pretty proud of how well breastfeeding is going too. The only thing is that I'm using a nipple shield because when Nolan was first born, his latch wasn't right and it left me with SCABBY NIPS! Admittedly, I was supposed to start to try and wean from the shield when my nips healed but Nolan already got used to the feel of the shield and since then it's been pretty difficult to get him to latch without it. Honestly though, I'm not really worried about it. If I have to use a nipple shield, so be it. It's not the most convenient but I'm ok with making it work.

Another "confession" is that we are using a pacifier. I have no issues with this, but I know a lot of people don't like the idea of false nipples to give to the baby, but I'm already giving him a nipple shield so... it doesn't really matter that much does it?

Nolan is feeding about every 2-3 hours, and sleeps anywhere from 2-3.5 hours. My husband is taking one feeding a night to give me some rest.

I LOVE his feet!!!

Sleeping in the swing.

Playing on his mat (staring into space actually...)
It's hard to write/update my blog anymore because Nolan is quite the time sucker. So sorry for not writing more! I will try to do more when I can.

12 Days In

It's hard to blog and be a new mom at the same time! But right now, Nolan is sleeping contently in his swing and I got a little more rest last night thanks to my husband and my breast pump.

Being a new mom is super hard. Definitely harder than I ever thought it could be. Mostly, it's the sleep depravation. I get up so many times in the middle of the night to feed Nolan and then when he falls asleep and I try to put him into his pack n play he wakes up and needs to be cuddled and held. He doesn't full on cry usually, but I can tell he's awake which keeps me awake.

Another thing that keeps me awake is the fear of SIDS. I have to check on him 2-3 times before I can relax enough to actually get some sleep. I have to make sure he's still breathing. I usually hold his little hands or play with his little feet to see if they kick or move. Yes, I realize that might contribute to him waking up, but the fear of SIDS is so engrained in me that I just don't feel like taking any chances.

Breastfeeding is going well with the exception of the fact that after he was born my nipples got so sore that they literally had scabs on them. So I have a nipple shield to use for feedings. I couldn't live without that thing honestly, and breastfeeding was torture without it. The lactation consultant was really reluctant to give it to me at first but I made it clear that it was far to painful to continue breastfeeding when I didn't have any protection. Even with the nipple shield at first, breastfeeding was painful. Now it's pretty painless. My milk came in on Thursday after having Nolan, same day as my appointment with the lactation consultant. Thank goodness. I think that was honestly my saving grace - getting milk in that is. It's been pretty easy to get Nolan interested in feeding and whenever he's full and gets all sleepy I like to say he's a "drunken sailor" because he just looks so silly and cute like he's milk drunk. I put him on my shoulder and burp him and if his eyes are closed and his head is pointed my way I just melt looking at his cute face.

My boobs have been leaking and at this point I'm just like "eff it" and don't even worry about the state of my clothes anymore. Yes, there are wet circles around my nipples but I've been home mostly and my husband doesn't care so I'm sloppy and doing the best I can to prevent the leaking but it happens.

I'm trying to wean from the nipple shield, so on Tuesday I went to the lactation consultant to discuss how to do this. Of course with her assistance I was able to get Nolan to latch and do a full 25-30 minute feeding on one side. Now I try that on my own and I'm torturing him! So I'm trying to slowly but surely reintroduce him to the plain nipple and see if he'll latch. So far no luck.

Today was my first outing since Nolan, and it was solo. I wanted to go to the store and pick up a few more sleepers for him with long sleeves since at nighttime he doesn't like to be swaddled and his little arms are always cold. I planned on having it be a family outing with the husband, Nolan, and myself. But my husband suggested that I go on my own. It was really hard to leave him (Nolan that is - I can usually part ways with my husband without much drama... hehe!) it was my first time away from him and even though he had his dad to take care of him, it's hard for me to not worry that something is going wrong while I'm not there. I pumped before going so I knew he wouldn't go hungry.

I was only gone for 30ish minutes and it really felt good. I was able to do some of my own thing for the first time in 12 days. It was refreshing in a way. And probably the reason I have the energy to write today. I picked up $120 in baby items. Yes, it's super easy to spend money on this little guy. But it was stuff that I believe will help make it easier on me while I'm on leave - and beyond.

Nolan's umbilical cord is still hanging on. Yesterday, I STUPIDLY noticed that it was hanging on by a thread and underneath was fresh blood - like you get when you pick a scab too soon. And I didn't like that so what do I do?? I put a Band-Aid on his little baby skin. OMG STUPID. Don't do this. The Band-Aid adhesive was so strong, I had to put vasoline on it to help "unstick" the adhesive. When I took the bandage off, it took a little strip of Nolan's skin along with it. Nolan was none-the-wiser, but I felt like the worlds worst mom.

Last weekend we got newborn pictures taken! I really loved this photographer for 1 main reason, the cost to have her come and take pictures included me getting all the images on a disk. I HATE the photography business plan where you have to pick and choose your photos and they're like $10-20 each on top of the fee you paid to get them to take the pictures in the first place. She did a really great job getting him posed and cute! Look at him, JUST LOOK!

A little smile

So sleepy!

Mama and baby!

Ok - it sounds like Nolan is waking up so I better feed him! TTYL!

My Birth Story

I probably shouldn't even be writing this right now, but I have to get it out! My baby Nolan is sleeping peacefully in my husband's arms - which means I should be sleeping too.

But here goes (and as always, I don't care if I have typos but it'd be really great if you didn't point em out to me... not that you guys do anyways! You're the best!!)

So Saturday, July 13th, my husband and I didn't have anything planned. We were officially three days overdue by that point so our minds were occupied with anything and everything baby. We went for a walk early in the morning to beat the heat and to hopefully kickstart labor. After the walk, I decided that I needed to hit up my acupuncture guy and be like, "please poke this baby out of me!" in a completely non-sexual way.

Nothing REALLY was going on though. I kind of felt twinges and stuff all day that I kinda/sorta thought was maybe something. But I didn't think much of it. Quite honestly, I thought I had days to go because I have a "family history" of late pregnancies. I was apparently 3 weeks late - however I sort of doubt this is comparable to how they measure pregnancies anymore because my mom didn't have an early u/s to determine gestational age like most of us do nowadays.

The husband and I had a lazy day. We grilled, made fettucine alfredo with spinach, and watched at least 5 episodes of Law & Order SVU with EVERY intention of picking up my house the next morning because surely we had time...

And then Nolan laughed and said, "nah, we're going to get this party started now."

My water broke naturally at around 11pm. It was a really crazy feeling. I can't adequately describe it so I'm going to use the best description I can... it was a sharp/dull pain. Oh weas, you just know how to paint a word picture. I remember making a little "oooh" sound and then all the sudden it was like HELLO WATER!

I had just gone to the bathroom minutes before so I was pretty much ruling out the fact that I could have peed myself at this point.

I sat on the toilet for a good 3-4 minutes and just felt the water trickle out of me. Meanwhile, I'm talking to my husband about how to get me ready to get in his car (read: how to make whatever is leaking out of me not spill onto his leather car seats!!!)

I asked him to pack a few of my last minute items, such as makeup and hair straightener... because I'm a model apparently and needed these things. I packed up my ipad, camelbak water bottle, and my purse. No wait, I had them by the door and forgot them at home instead. WHOOPSIE

It didn't matter. We were on our way to the hospital.

FUN FACT: Prior to the big day, my family all added each other to the Find Friends app for iphone. I told the fam they can stalk me that way (it's a GPS app) so when I'm at the hospital, they'd know what's up.

Before we got out of the car in the parking lot, my brother had just texted me "OMG" and apparently the whole immediate family (my side only) knew it was showtime!

We get checked in/tested my waters for amniotic fluid simultaneously. Apparently at my hospital they don't do the pH test that I have become familiar with, but basically a q-tip test that is more accurate.
Before delivery

I'm modeling during Fashion Week later this year.

Husband before delivery :) Too cute!
They figured out that yes, my water had broken!!! I wasn't getting contractions yet so my husband and I wandered up and down the hallway of the hospital birthing wing and tried to get the party started.

It didn't take too long for my excitement to get labor going before I realized... ummm I am going to need to sleep at some point through the night. So the hubs and I tried to get some shut eye.

Honestly, I can't remember if I actually fell asleep but I want to say that I was just in that nodding off state when contractions started. Nothing I couldn't handle at first. They kind of felt like a warm pulsating sensation. It started from within and worked itself outwards.

It was like this, except lower and painful and less heartwarming/tearjerking.
By about 3 or 4 in the morning the contractions were no laughing matter. I got in and out of the bath tub twice in the morning and that helped a lot.

The contractions combined with the fact that I couldn't eat (stooopid weas, you didn't eat before going to the hospital!!!) made me super nauseated. I remember at least 5 times I told my husband I felt like I was going to throw up and it passed. Eventually though, I did throw up... into a bucket my husband was holding. I was leaning onto him while I was in pain and knew it was coming and told him to close his eye and we revisited the fettucine alfredo with spinach dinner from earlier.

FUN FACT: My husband says he now knows what it's like to be a toilet.

My midwife came in around 6 or 7 in the morning. She checked me and said I was 3cms and maybe 80% effaced. I definitely dropped the "g-dammit" bomb because I thought, or hoped, that I was at least 5 by this point.

Ughhh...

My midwife asked me what I was going to do about pain management and I told her I wanted an epidural but that the pain wasn't that bad and I could wait. She replied that if I knew I was going to get an epidural I could just get one right then and if the epidural slowed down contractions they could just give me pitocin. She was so chill about me getting an epidural - something I wasn't quite sure about with another midwife at the practice. She really made me feel at ease. I didn't need to reach some arbitrary 5-6 cms goal like I wanted initially.

So I agreed - gimme the drugs.

FUN FACT: At some point through the night, the nurse told me about Cory Monteith's passing. Not that I didn't appreciate knowing current events, I kinda didn't want to associate his passing with my baby's birth... didn't feel quite right.

The anesthesiologist must have heard me say "let's do an epi" because no more than maybe 5 minutes after I agreed to drugs he was in the room prepping me. But not before hearing the scariest thing I heard while in labor:

Nurse: She needs to get fluids or whatever in her before you can do this (You should know that apparently I needed some saline beforehand... the nurse was trying to explain that I hadn't had this done yet - thus the perfectly transcribed first line of this dialogue)
Anesthesiologist: Well I have do it either RIGHT NOW or I'm going to be busy for the next 4 hours.
Me: Come on in!

The doctor comes in and they ask me to do a "well minded" check. I had to explain what I was about to have happen before the doc could do anything apparently.

FUN FACT: I didn't sign the epidural consent forms til after the fact. OOPSIE on the staff. But I didn't care.

I'd like to take a moment to praise whoever is responsible for the epidural. And especially my doctor. The epi I had was picture perfect. I had the full ability to move my legs, wiggle my toes, and even lift my butt off the table when needed. The staff commented several times that it must have been done perfectly. My pain was no more.

Seriously no more than 5 minutes after getting the epi I was asleep. It was about 8 in the morning by this point and I am not one to pull all nighters. So my body was exhausted and they all encouraged me to sleep. I got about 1 1/2 hours of sleep. And so did my husband - who I should mention was an absolute star of the labor and delivery. I think it was really hard for him to see me in such pain. But he did everything I asked and whatever I needed. Mostly I just asked for water and some back rubs.

Fast forward to about 11am, my midwife comes back and checks me again. I'm at 8, maybe 9 cms at this point. They keep upping my pitocin which they started several hours earlier when my contractions slowed from about every 3 minutes (pre-epi) to about 6-8 mins (post-epi).

Fast forward again to about 1pm. Another good thing about my epi was that I could feel things going on. I could still feel the water dripping out of me at this point. But the pain itself was gone. I mentioned to the nurse that I was feeling that dripping feeling and it was like a lot was coming out of me and she said that was my bloody show. That meant that I was probably fully dilated and almost ready to push! WAHOO!!

Midwife comes in, checks me, and they start getting their game faces on. She changes into scrubs/paper gown to prep for delivery. They have me lift up my butt to put some pads down to catch the water/blood from pushing. More compliments about my epidural and my ability to control my body. I was like, "oh I forgot to tell you that I'm AWESOME" and we all had a good laugh.

Just kidding, I was about to push.

It was around this time that the epidural was no match for my contractions. I could start to feel them coming on about every 20-30 seconds or so. With the epidural, the pain was bearable. Very bearable. But still not comfortable.

We started pushing at 1:15. I remember looking at the time and telling my husband to remember it because I wanted to get the time right for ye olde blog. The midwife told me that it usually takes FTM's about 2-3 hours of pushing. I needed to know that so I knew what to expect out of this... so thankfully she told me that amount of time.

Pushing was crazy. I lead the pushing on my own. Even though a monitor was telling the staff when I was having contractions - no one told me to push. I told them I was pushing. The hubs counted to 10 with each push and I did about 4 pushes per contraction.

I was getting such great encouragement from the midwife and nurse. I was really thrilled because they genuinely seemed impressed with my pushing ability. I was relieved that he was coming out on his own!

At some point his head was reaching the outside. My midwife told me to reach down and feel him! I didn't think that I wanted to at first, but then my curiosity go the best of me and I reached down and felt his head! After doing it the one time, I touched a few more times with later contractions to see how he was progressing. It was so weird when I felt more and more of him coming out of me.

MEANWHILE it felt like I was taking the biggest poop of my life.

The midwife and nurse and the hubs were all still encouraging me to push when I was having contractions. He was getting to the point where it was maybe one or two contractions away. On, what would become my final "pushing" contraction, they all gleefully told me to push just one more time (making it 5 pushes that contraction) and that was it!

By 2:11pm NOLAN was here! My midwife had me pull him up to my chest immediately after delivery. He was goopy and warm. Very slippery too! He was crying and crying! I was soooo amazed. I just didn't know what to do or say, so I just kept saying over and over again how much I love him! I counted his fingers and toes (10 of each BTW) and just looked at him while he was screaming and scared. So I just kept talking to him, saying whatever I could think, hoping that he would recognize my voice and calm down.
Our first picture together!

Not pictured: My nipple. Before cropping this photo, I had a definite wardrobe malfunction that made it to facebook.

Proud Daddy!
It was honestly a perfect birth story. He was 8 pounds 4 ounces and 20 inches long! I stared at him then, and I'll probably do this for a long time, but I just kept saying, "I can't believe you're mine!" I gave him some good hugs and kisses and I started my life as a mother.

Overdue Report: 2 Days And Counting

Last Day Of Work:
Officially reporting live from my last day at work. I told my supervisor and emailed everyone at work... I'm donzo! I think about 98% of my job responsibilities today have been answering the, "have you had that baby yet?" questions... ugh. Honestly it was cute for a while but literally I have to sit through them asking questions that are a little too personal like, "how did the doctor's appointment go?... ANY PROGRESS?" Ummm unless I know you a little better, I'm not going to tell you about the condition of my cervix kthxbai.

My PgAL Interview:
The interview went so well yesterday! I wasn't quite sure how it was going to go or what to expect but after all is said and done I think it's going to be a short piece that also brings in medical professionals to discuss how they care for a PgAL woman. Unfortunately, I don't think the piece is going to be as "advice giving" from me as I would have liked but I hope it helps! At the very least, I think it will be good for women to see that it's possible to move on from a loss - at least a little.

I'd say the part that was scariest for me was all the time leading up to it. I was nervous that I was just going to cry on camera! And to be honest, I'm shocked that I didn't. There were definitely moments where my eyes were tearing up but I brought myself back from the brink of crying and composed myself. I wanted to get the message across - that was most important to me.

To follow up, the woman who interviewed me wants to do another interview post-baby to talk about my miscarriage. I think that will be a lot harder to talk about than being PgAL to be honest. There is obviously quite a bit more pain in that regard than being PgAL. PgAL is more fear, but TTCAL is definitely more pain. Both suck a lot, but I think it's 100% safe to say that I'm happy to be pregnant and that the weight of TTCAL was a lot for me emotionally.

I wish I had taken a picture of all the equipment this woman brought in. She wasn't messing around. She had a camera setup, a big light with the umbrella (like professional photographers have), a backpack full of technical equipment like a microphone and stuff like that. And it was all done in my little nursery! I hope that it looks good on TV! Thank goodness the room was like 90% put together... and clean!

Overdue Report:
I'm 2 days overdue! I'm really excited to get this little guy here... like today. Definitely had a coworker tell me that I should have sex to get things going today. Nope, that wasn't awkward. But I can say that I absolutely feel amazing considering that I'm overdue.

Of course I have issues sleeping/getting up several times in the middle of the night. My back does hurt but it feels better if I go for a short walk here and there throughout the day.

----

But yeah, pretty awesome feeling to be at this point right now. I can't wait for the next step!
